Persistence in business is one of the crucial characteristics of all successful people.
Recently I watched a documentary about legendary soccer player Diego Armando Maradona. His big days are over a long time ago but nowadays he coaches some second graded teams every now and then. We could say that probably his strongest asset as a coach is the strategical and motivational component of the whole journey. Where does persistence in business fit in here?
Soccer is really not my thing but I like to watch documentaries as there is always some useful information to discover there if the content is good. That proved to be the case here as well.
In one of the scenes a young and inexperienced player falls into desperation and does not know what to do when losing the momentum on the field. Maradona approaches to have a word with the player who is basically on the edge of desperation.
So, the player starts to complain about how he doesn’t know what is happening. He lost 15 balls and sees it as a disaster.
Now, the player is very young and he was probably reaching his limit at that particular time. However, there was actually a lot to do at this moment. One of the greatest players-Maradona, gave him probably the best lesson he will hear in his life. He told him “I want you to keep doing what you’re doing because at one point their defense will get tired”.
This whole documentary series is worth watching just because of that one sentence. Although you immediately understand the meaning of it, there’s a proof of concept hidden in the background because this whole thing comes from one of the best in the world.
There is no such thing as instant success
The same thing we’ll find in any aspect of life – in entrepreneurship in particular. There is no such thing as instant success. For sure it happens sometimes but that is not part of the hard work. Most of the nowadays leading companies would not exist if their founders had quit after initial failure. Meaning, if they did not have the necessary persistency.
Never give up
As time passes by, and you stay in course and keep pushing, the ones around you are falling off.
There is less and less of everything around you and the way to success becomes more clear.
In the end, the road is completely clear and the success is in front of you.
You just need to grab it!
